Psychology and Heritage Studies

According to me personal experience of studying psychology I found it to be a scientific study of behavior and the mind. Whereas I found Heritage is to be the both natural and man-made; therefore heritage may consist of landscapes or buildings. Its components may vary from country to country but one outstanding attribute of heritage is that it helps to give us our collective identities.

During my studies I learned that psychology investigates an enormous range of phenomena: learning and memory, sensation and perception, motivation and emotion, thinking and language, personality and social behavior, intelligence, infancy and child development, mental illness, and a lot more. Psychologists examine these topics from many different perspectives. Some conduct detailed biological studies of the brain, others explore how we process information; and still others study the influence of culture and society.

On the other hand I found that Heritage reinforces our understanding of our surroundings and society. It enhances our ability as teachers or civil servants and gives a competitive edge in the field of tourism and other allied occupations. This course of study prepares participants for positions in the growing heritage industry. Best of all it is fulfilling and fun. Rooted in both Philosophy & Science, Psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes. Psychological issues permeate our everyday lives and the world at large; Psychology seeks to explore questions that have existed since the beginning of human history.

During our studies we were exposed to a wide variety of courses related to human behavior, including social, emotional, cognitive and language development; the relationship of the individual to others and society; childhood, adulthood and aging; psychopathology and mental health; and race, sex, gender, and identity issues. Through studying psychology, students will gain an understanding of why people think, act and feel the way they do.

In my personal opinion Psychology as a subject provides a challenging area that integrates theoretical study, empirical investigation and practical application; basic knowledge and principles of human behavior and provides a sound foundation for graduate work in psychology.

To me, studying psychology provides a foundation of knowledge and a method of inquiry that benefits students who want to work in fields as far ranging as clinical and counselling settings, law, politics, education and business.
