Many theories believe that self-esteem is a basic human need and intention to lead. American psychologist Abraham Maslow suggested the concept of hierarchy of needs to which considered self-esteem as one of the most important need. According to Maslow a person needs recognition and approval from the society in order to increase his self-esteem. Due to the lack of recognition person's self-esteem becomes more fragile. There are different theories according to which self-esteem is the most important need to a person. Self-esteem evolved to check one's level of status and acceptance in ones' social group. Self-esteem of a person is developed on the basis of a ratio of person's successes in areas of life compared to the failures he encountered. Most people's self-esteem is based on what they value, their beliefs or interests, and the attitudes that they have. Therefore it is impossible to escape the notion that someone doesn't have self-esteem. It is whatever they make it out to be, but not only do they choose their own self-esteem, but others have a big part in deciding it as well.
Self image
Through the analysis of different researches it has been observed that the information required to construct or destruct the self image of a person is preferentially encoded and recalled from memory. This is the reason that past experiences of a person have a significant impact on the perception of a person about himself today. Meager self image may be the result of continuous criticisms that the person encountered in his period of life. It is believed that the childhood experiences have great impact on person's self-image because child's perception can be mold and controlled easily. Self-image of children who have encountered criticism in their childhood is weak as they grow up. Self image can be defined as psychological picture of a person, self image of a person cannot be made of amended quickly as it requires a lot of time in construction as well as destruction. Self image of a person not only portray the in-depth details of a person's capabilities such as height, weight, hair color, gender, intelligence etc, but also includes person's learning about himself, this learning is developed through past experiences, relationships or any other encounters that he suffered during his life. Self image of a person can also be modified through judgments of other as they have a significant impact on the construction or destruction of a person's self-image. Self-image of a person is highly vulnerable to either personal experiences or the judgments from others.
