Features of Good Coaching Program: Psychology theories and findings

Introduction

The profession of coaching has witnessed an amazing growth over past twenty years as explained by (Stober and Grant, 2006). In today's world, an individual person can take guidance and help from several coaching programs and coaching techniques like executive coaching technique, wellness coaching technique and others. Further, during current period the role of internet technologies in this field have also seen growth (Cref, 1991).

Internet has played an important and effective role in every field of life including coaching profession and as explained by (Liljenstrand and Nebeker, 2008) the both this professions are on the same path.

The main of objective of an individual consulting a coaching professional that they wanted to improve and enhance their performance and in due process develop a relationship with that coaching professional. In this relationship the task of a coach is to improve or enhance the performance of an individual in respected area of interest it their behaviour (Flaherty, 2005).

Coaches for the completion of their task use several methods and techniques to enhance the performance of the individuals. In addition, as explained by important scholars that the concept of coaching is similar to that of psychotherapy, with certain obvious differences.

For instance the client who seeks coaching therapy are self motivated, strong minded, and are free from any psychotherapy issues as being compared with other individuals who seek therapy options (Diener, 2009).

Introduction of modern techniques and communication tools like internet and other has played an effective role in the increase in awareness of coaching program, and currently individual with the help of these technologies and can communicate with their coaches from in and out of the organization.

Despite having an old history the profession of coaching has not able to produce and effective studies that can be fruitful in supporting their concepts and methods as being compared to their traditional form of psychotherapy. Because of this, insufficient information and scientific support can raise certain questions from professional of education and sociology.

As the profession of coaching is being compared with psychological profession therefore for over the years several important theories have appeared that have clearly defined the relation of coaching and Psychology.

Goals and Goal Setting Theories

Several important and well-known scholars have been able to conduct progressive studies on goal and motivation and their impact on individual performance, but the most effective, authentic and reliable theories were introduced by (Locke and Latham, 1990). While on the other hand this theory was initially, develop by analyzing the work place but for so many years it has been implemented in different, other aspects like Sports, education and health of an individual (Locke and Latham, 1990).
