There are several approaches that therapists have adopted for treatment or behavior modification. Having a clear understanding of these techniques can help therapists devise an effective intervention to treat patients. Two such approaches are thought-focused treatment and psychoanalytical treatment. Thought-focused treatment system can into existence after researches posed questions to the procedures and practices of psychoanalytical treatments. The two approaches differ on the basis of emotion, cognition, human behavior, therapy process and therapeutic interventions.
In terms of difference, the objective of psychoanalytical treatment is to attain the best possible position of equilibrium for the operation of the ego which is dominated by the principle of reality (Seligman & Reichenberg, 2009). In psychoanalytical treatment, the emphasis in on clinical listening to patients and engaging in discussion regarding their prior experiences so as to be able to identify the prominent event that could be the root of the problems that the client is faced. Therapists who practice psychoanalysis are of the view that previous experiences, particularly during the childhood, and unconscious emotions impact the behavior of the patients and influence their mental health. Psychoanalysis lays emphasis on emotions instead of cognition. Employing this technique, the patient is allowed to provide a detailed analysis of the experiences with the therapist maintain control over the session by keeping an compassionate and non-judgmental attitude toward the patient.
