The Impact of Social networking technologies on Education

The Impact of Social networking technologies on Education

Introduction

Context of the Research

The advent of the Internet has radically changed the way we live. Even in schools, the opportunities offered by the Web have expanded the possibilities and ways of learning and integration for both, students and teachers. Previously, students and teachers had access only to "local resources", now they can also rely on global resources. In UK, 96% of students use social networks, 30% have a personal blog, and 59% use social media to discuss topics related to their studies. Social media, which are blogs, wikis or social networks, are definitely not the ultimate solution to certain problems that are often faced in education, but they can be excellent allies for students and teachers; allies that are capable of transmitting values such as integration, sharing and collaboration. The importance of social networks is well established in view of their growing number of users. Many students take advantage of these social networks and effectively control many functions but, at times, these students also suffer various negative effects affecting their studies (Dobrzañski, 2007, pp. 691-694). Of course, social networks are a valuable resource to keep informed of the latest technical advances and to keep in touch with friends and family, but some of the pitfalls and negative effects should also be avoided.

A major advantage of the web that benefit student is accessibility to any kind of information at any time. However, having access to a great amount of information available most of the time does not encourage students to learn, memorize and retain information. The use of social networks also encourages its users, including students, to perform multiple tasks and view the different sites and networks at the same time. Therefore, the ability of the student to focus on their work is significantly reduced, which leads to a decrease in student's ability to learn and remember (Shivkumar, 2006, pp. 15-17).

Most students spend a great amount of time on social networks and less time for social activities. Social networks are very useful but an ineffective way of socializing. This is because these online social networks do not incorporate tone of voice, gestures or facial expressions. Another major disadvantage of this technology is that students do not focus much on the spelling and grammar while socializing on these online networks. As a result, the student gradually forgets how to write well without the spell of their computers. Finally, one of the pitfalls of these networks is that they allow certain anonymity, reducing the retention of their users. In addition, it is also noted that students who use technology and social networks are more prone to health problems such as stomach pain, headache or loss of sleep (Turban, 2010, p. 392).

Given the risks for both the health and the future of students induced by excessive use of social networks, it is important to coach them so that they can take full advantage of information technology while remaining ...
