Introduction

Strategic alliances consist of two or more organizations that contractually pool resources to achieve a long-term strategic purpose that is not possible for a single organization.'(Appleby 94) This definition excludes mergers and acquisitions and trade associations, but includes a wide variety of other interorganizational partnerships, ranging from relatively formal joint-venture agreements where equity is shared to relatively informal cooperative agreements where equity is not shared.
