Abstract

This thesis proposal aims to develop our thesis that metaphors have unknown benefits or detriments to the students of biology. The students do not necessarily benefit from these metaphors through their understanding of the complex principles of biology connoted by these metaphors. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the utility of these metaphors to the students of biology. We will utilize both primary and secondary research to develop our thesis. The primary research will comprise in-depth interviews, observations of biology students, as well surveying them. The results will be included in the thesis. Further, validation and reliability of data will also be ensured. Lastly, the research will make real contribution to the literature through identifying the nature and effectiveness of the use of metaphors in biology in particular and in other physical sciences in general.

Introduction

Metaphor is a big problem in education and learning. While metaphor is very good, it gives too much problem to the person who is not the native speaker of English. It creates problems in understanding the subject matter, for example in biology. The students are unable to understand the language of the text which contains difficult metaphors. A metaphor is the use of figurative language where a word or phrase denoting one object is used for another object to create an analogy (Merriam Webster, 2012). However, metaphor is also used to create additional understanding for the students of biology and other disciplines. It helps them to understand unfamiliar concepts.

In this way, the use of metaphors is common in education. However, the usage of metaphors in educational texts and their usefulness is not well determined. For example, it is not known whether the use of metaphors is good. We have both native and non-native speakers of English at universities. Therefore, it is not clear whether the metaphors are equally understood by both the types of speakers of English. Furthermore, there may be the need to know the usefulness and effectiveness of using metaphors in education so as to know the benefit achieved in the form of understanding of the student. Further, this use of metaphor applies equally to all the various disciplines of education, ranging from physical to social sciences as well as to non-science subjects.

This thesis will become essential part and a degree requirement of the Master's program in Biology of the university. This thesis will be submitted by the end of the semester.

Thesis statement

We need to know as to how metaphors are used in literature. Further, we need to know the effectiveness and benefit of using metaphors in educational literature. We also need to find the exact benefits of better understanding of the students with the use of metaphors.
