Project Management and Leadership

Introduction

The Denver International Runway Project (DIR) is one of the largest runways in United States (US) made on 140 square kilometers. Currently the airport handles around 41 airlines and having traffic more than 3,905,138 passengers. During the construction of the airport, implementation of an automated integrated baggage system to minimize the turnaround time was a critical component. But it turned to be one of the woeful incidents in the history of technology project implementation (Winston, 2009).

The project was initiated to bring a change and improvement in the DIR project where the whole infrastructure of the airport could handle larger jumbo jets and lower the already busy airports of US. A team from DMJM was being assigned to construct a runway under the budget of $166 million (US) and it got completed in under 3 year's time. The project included an electronic control system which may decrease the number of heavy trafficking of international air traffic.

The project management concept of iron triangle was being used to complete the project which represents the Scope, Time and the Cost/Resources of the project. These three are all interrelated that even a slight change in one of the factor can fail the project, so it is necessary to amend all the three altogether to complete the project. The project life cycle travels through four phases which are: Initiation, Planning, Execution and Closure. Each and every phase describes the project definition, a detailed planning of the project, the monitoring and control of it and the overall project review. Due to 9/11 the airport did increased its security measures by facing many unique challenges for the construction of the runway due to the altitude and project parameters especially for moving targets (Winston, 2009).

Life Cycle of the project

A life cycle of a project is the sequence in which the current objective of the project is being achieved through activities that are being implemented through the four phases of life cycle. There are certain process groups who help in making the project successful which are Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and controlling and closing process groups.

Initiation

The initiation stage involves all the project objectives which will be needed to achieve in order to develop the project by undertaking a feasibility study of it. A project team will be set up for establishing the charter of the project where all the three iron triangle factors will be analyzed for performing a phase review of the project management. In this phase, a project preliminary scope, its time management and budgeting will be made which is being required for the completion of the DIR project (Method 123, n.d.).

Planning

The planning stage includes the creation of the project plan, resource plan and the financial plan where all the budgeting for the project can be decided. The planning of the project schedule is being made for proper scheduling of tasks so that division of labor can easily be sorted because the DIR project was being constructed with proper ...
