Introduction to Project Management

The Association for Project Management on its website defines project management as the 'way of managing change'. Though, Modesto &Tichapondwa (2009) state that the word project was earlier associated with professions like of engineering and later on with many diverse and other specialized fields. The reason for emerging of these additional fields was due to the advancement in technology, including Information Technology where project management is extensively used in the software development industry. Though, the Association for Project Management describes that in today's era anything that requires diligent work and planning can be called project management, be it an event like a wedding or a lengthy research assignment.

Furthermore, the Association for Project Management recognizes two important features that portray project management in a business environment. The first feature is that of uniqueness, as not all business projects are the same and have different requirements and objectives. The second feature mentioned is the time period or span of the project, at the end of which the determined objectives must be realized. In project management objectives are the time, quality and costs related to the project. Similarly, these objectives can also be construed as constraints for the business if a thorough project plan is not followed (Association for Project Management).

Conversely, Chapman (n.d) describes the need for project management in various divisions of an organization. This includes human resources, sales, IT and communications, warehousing and storage, marketing, manufacturing, quality assurance, legal department and business development amongst many other functions of an organization.

Discussion

This assignment aims to highlight the different concepts, tools and techniques of project management in light of developing a project proposal for a new project. This new project aims to develop educational software to improve the spelling ability of children and adults alike. The concept of this proposal is inspired by the work of Pelayo (2012) that has greatly influenced the further development of this proposal. Though, it is necessary to mention that the organizational name and certain scenarios mentioned in the proposal are assumed for the purposes of logical analysis.
