Section A - Selection and Approval of a 'Case Study Project'

This paper explores the concept of project management in a holistic context. Generally, project management is distinguished from the general management of corporations by the mission-oriented nature of a project. A project organization will generally be terminated when the mission is accomplished . Project management is the art of directing and coordinating human and material resources throughout the life of a project by using modern management techniques to achieve predetermined objectives of scope, cost, time, quality and participation satisfaction (Kerzner, 2009: 149-151). The case study involves the analyses the project for the construction of a multistory luxurious flats by Westfield at Sydney. The project marks the introduction of Smart- Homes by the organization named as the “Dreamz Unlimited” project. With the project the organization plans to construct the modern luxurious homes and create wonders in the current construction of residential buildings. Since it is unique and pilot project, the company plans to construct 75 flats only. The houses will have central controlling of the atmosphere both heat, cold, gardens at all the floors, and chores like the automatic watering of the gardens, lighting, and home security alarms.

The project is a two years scheduled project needs to be completed by the end of year 2014. The estimated cost of the project is $2000 million. The project is the biggest project undertaken by the organization and hence its success is of paramount importance for the company.

a. Assess the “complexity” of the 'Case Study' project

The company has taken the responsibility to provide completely furnished homes with everything done from drawing the curtains automatically on getting up in the morning to switching the lights in the evening and pre- switching the air conditioning system so that the house is temperature controlled for warmth or cold by the time the residents arrive home from their work. The automated system is safe for children in house as all these things are covered and are installed either under the floor or above the roof. The satellite connections will be provided without any hassle and bundle of wires. The society will have 24 hour security backup with camera surveillance.

All these qualities require intense planning, coordination and monitoring of the project. More so since this is the pilot project of its type and will so much of technology and modernization, there will be required a lot of innovation in designing and layouts and even hit and trial errors. Thus the project uses various techniques for planning and controlling the activities of the project. The techniques used in planning will give the insight into the requirements of the customers and their demand along with the available resources.
