Project Management

Executive Summary

Wireless infrastructure can help if it is deployed as the primary system. It offers remote and safe devices that are ideal for those firms with several employees. Education, health care & finance companies can attain many benefits from WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). It enables the user to be connected without using peripheral cables. Project management is a strategy to apply skills and experience in carrying out a project efficiently and effectively. It is a strategic capability for enterprises which allows them to connect the business objects to their projects to compete with competitors. Project management is a proactive approach to achieve the quality by improving and monitoring the process. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the CIO in following aspects. 1) General idea of implementing a wireless technology infrastructure 2), potential threats, their consequences and possible solutions 3), cost and resource planning and implementation strategy. The results have proved the new network infrastructure as cost-effective and beneficial than the peripheral based Local Area Network (LAN) in several ways.

Introduction Organizations today, believe that wireless local area network (WLAN) technology is suitable, flexible, economical and user-friendly. Their employees can move inside the offices with their laptops/palmtops connected to the system. Technology has enabled users to send and receive data in a safe manner using wireless connections. It has also provided the users with functions such as web browsing, internet searching and send/receive emails via their phones and PDAs (Personal digital assistants).

President of APM M. Barnes (2012) defines the project management as “At its most fundamental, project management is about people getting things done”. Project management is a strategy to execute your knowledge and skills in executing a project in an efficient way. Project managers define it as a “proactive approach” that executes the plan in such a manner that can satisfy organizations goals.

Project management Institute (PMI, 2013), describes it as process oriented approach divided into five steps:

Initiation

Planning the activities

Executing the plan

Controlling the activities

Closing the project

Research questions As we begin to plan a wireless technology infrastructure, following questions will come to our minds:

What type of network is employed?

What benefits company can have?

How will it operate?

What would be your system and devices such as laptops or 3G cell phones or other products will interact with other systems?

Would WLAN infrastructure be cost-effective?

What competitive advantages an organization would gain?

Discussion

General overview Many users and firms are searching for new technologies that can decrease their budgets and increase their productivity. Companies today prefer establishing their network structure through wireless devices because it covers both of these factors. In order to face the competitive challenges, companies are using IT infrastructure inside their business (Fitzgerald, 1996, p.175).

Wireless technologies are experiencing a growth in industries, such as energy transmissions, railway infrastructure, health care and other utilities. Now, people prefer to work “on the go” or from their homes due to social and cultural changes. These modifications for the remote users can only be ...
