Project Management and Leadership

Introduction

The Denver International Runway Project (DIR) is one of the largest runways in United States (US) made on 140 square kilometers. Currently the airport handles around 41 airlines and having traffic more than 3,905,138 passengers. During the construction of the airport, implementation of an automated integrated baggage system to minimize the turnaround time was a critical component. But it turned to be one of the woeful incidents in the history of technology project implementation (Winston, 2009).

The project was initiated to bring a change and improvement in the DIR project where the whole infrastructure of the airport could handle larger jumbo jets and lower the already busy airports of US. A team from DMJM was being assigned to construct a runway under the budget of $166 million (US), and it got completed in under 3 year's time. The project included an electronic control system which may decrease the number of heavy trafficking of international air traffic.

The project management concept of the iron triangle was being used to complete the project which represents the Scope, Time and the Cost/Resources of the project. These three are all interrelated that even a slight change in one of factors can fail the project, so it is necessary to amend all the three altogether to complete the project. The project life cycle travels through four phases which are: Initiation, Planning, Execution and Closure. Each and every phase describes the project definition, a detailed planning of the project, monitoring and control of it and the overall project review. Due to 9/11 the airport did increased its security measures by facing many unique challenges for the construction of the runway due to the altitude and project parameters especially for moving targets (Winston, 2009).DiscussionProject plan need

The county of Denver operates and owns Denver international airport. According to Dong & Hayhoe, (1997) under the city character, management, control and operation of DIA delegated the city Aviation department. The project team would need to consider that there are several factors in construction and designing the DIR. The international runway is not longer than the domestic runways as they accommodate large jets. In addition, management of an airport is determined that it would be a need to considered that the next generation of get engineering is to attract the international air traffic from major airlines all around the world.

The new airplanes such as A380 considerably treated as larges than their predecessors and it required more runway area to take off and land more easily (McNerney & Kelley, 2007). Furthermore, area required for taking off and landing at a higher altitude requires longer runway than those at below sea level as their engines not frequently perform in thinner air. According to these factors, DIR need to abandon the runway standard model of construction and must ensure that height and size of runway should support flying giants.

Although project covered massive area, and it was also important that project does not interfere any operation of the ...
