PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION IN NURSING

Thesis Statement

The term communication employs the human interaction between the nurse and the patient or any of the patient's acquaintances for acquiring background about the patient's medical history.

1. Background

Historically, it all started in 1967 which used to provide a brief outlook on the correspondence between doctors and nurses involving nurses' recommendations and advice to doctors, categorized as “doctor-nurse game” (Stein LI et al., 1967). However, over the past years after the initial correspondence started in 1967, there was a huge dropout as in communication barrier in the form of verbal abuses, unruly behavior of physicians etc. However, the communicative gap between the nurses and the doctor is still debatable and unclear (Mauksch IG, 1981; Coeling H et al., 1991; Evans SA et al, 1992; Terres, 1994).

2. Introduction

Many criteria have been set up to contribute towards the education of nurses majorly covering such practices that are required to maintain the professional status of nurses. Many organizations that have been particularly employed to educate nurses are further improving their hiring processes that are indeed a main contribution to nursing excellence. Professional nurses complies feature such as strong communication skills that are usually helpful in improving and easing out the healthcare interactions as a team. Case Study

A generalized study was conducted to evaluate the interactions of nurses with its counterparts and other healthcare members. In this study, a total of fifty participants took part in which around 25 were staff nurses, 5 charge nurses, 3 clinical nurse specialists, 7 physicians, 6 PCAs and 4 unit clerks. The interactions were observed in 4 diverse units: general surgery unit, surgical intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care and general medicine.

The collection of data was done through interviews and direct observations. Applicants were asked to describe the features of nurses that in their opinion denoted professionalism. At a time, only 4 nurses were analyzed and were observed till about 3-5 hours. Four extensive sets of communication were analyzed: 1.Working as a team with other counterparts. 2. Realistic talks avoiding jargon or irrelevant terms. 3. Care and respect towards patients. 4. Management skills i.e. managing time efficiently. 5. Read previous notes in order to gather knowledge about the patient's health history. The young nurses were trained under the above mentioned criteria in order to serve as role models, who might eventually lead to successful team interactions.
