President Powers and Public Policies

Introduction

As United States has presidential system, president play a role of head of state and also head of government. Being the head of state president represents the nation at home and abroad. Therefore, president has the power to receive heads of other's countries. For example, Head of France or Queen of United Kingdom of Great Britain. President has the power to propose diplomatic relationships with other countries.

Types of Presidential Powers

There are certain powers in U.S. Constitution which assist the president to propose policies or propose to change policies relating to public. These authorities enable the president to make sure constructive development on many of the key issues which country is facing.

Executive Power

Under executive powers, president has a wide range powers to control national dealings and operations of the federal government. The president has the power to propose rules and regulations which are known as executive orders. All federal agencies are binding to rules, and regulations executed by the president. President of United States is also responsible to propose the budget of the country then congress passes the budget as per budget and accounting Act 1921. As per executive powers, president also acts as Commander in chief of armed forces (Dean, 2005).

Legislative Power

President does posses legislative power which enable the president to propose changes in law. President does have the power to veto the bill which come from the congress then bill will again go back to congress for changes. If the president signs the bill, then it is incorporated into law within ten days of delivery (Edwards, 2006).

Appointment Powers

The president does have appointment powers. President used to appoint around new 6,000 staffs at confederate positions. He has the power to nominate judges for US court of appeal and Supreme Court. There are certain political appointments that include staff for advisers and assistant which are not suppose to be reviewed by Senate. However, appointment for judge can be reviewed by Senate (Gellman, 2007).

Powers related to Public Policies

The main branch which facilitates public policy is the executive branch. On the other hand, general government policies are typically derived from law, legislative and administrative decisions. Public policies are related to criminals, culture, national security, economic affair, education, environment, operation of government, health care, social welfare and foreign affairs. Few of these are described below:

Polices related to Criminal Justice

President has power under the executive branch to deal with issues of criminal justice. This policy is directly related to public as criminals are among public. President has the power to propose the amendment in policy related to the death penalty, controlling weapons and drug policy. President proposes policies through which he can ensure better law and order situation and minimize drugs (Genovese, 1985).

Culture and Society
