POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression

Introduction

Women have a very profound experience of the children, both physically and psychologically. It is natural phenomena that many new mothers experience postpartum mood swings; i.e. feeling happy, sometimes sad. These feelings are sometimes called "baby blues". In most cases, the change disappears about 10 days after delivery. However, some women may experience a deep depression, and continue to last longer. This condition is termed as the post-natal depression or Postpartum Depression.

It is significant to categorize and distinguish early indications of postpartum depression, whoever it may be. This may be difficult, because depression is often irrational fear, which some new moms have of losing control or by others as not fit to be a mother. (Ross, Dennis, 2009)

Discussion

Researchers have recognized three types of postpartum depression: baby blues (baby blue), postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis.

Many women suffer from mood swings after having the child which can be quite severe. They feel happy one moment and the next moment they may start to cry. They may feel depressed, sometimes they switch their appetite. They may not even be able to sleep properly.

These Symptoms usually pass within 10 days after birth. However, in some women, symptoms do not go, and usually present in them for months. And this is known as postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression is a disease and can be viewed through treatment, therapy and support groups. Many women are depressed immediately after birth, but some women do not usually fall into depression for many weeks or months after birth. Any depression that occurs within 6 months of birth can be taken as postpartum depression.

This type of depression is usually observed in women when depression is not associated with pregnancy, women who suffer from severe PMS, those who are in a difficult marriage, those who have not too many friends and family addiction, or those who have stressful situations during pregnancy or after childbirth.

Researchers still do not know the exact causes of postpartum depression. However, they believe that changes in hormones during pregnancy and after birth play a role. Researchers believe that changes in hormone levels can cause chemical changes in the brain and this in turn may be leading to depression.

This type of depression can last from several weeks to several months. In some women, symptoms can be quite severe, and sometimes it takes time to go. However, these women can be seen in depression, like any other depression. (Brown, Sylvia and Mary, 2002)

Statistics

According to statistics, more than 50% of women who are mothers, observes this disease, more or less having postpartum depression.

Reasons and factors

The exact cause of postpartum depression is unknown. Occur during pregnancy and hormonal changes after childbirth are the possible factors. In addition, if students did not follow the mother's prospect as the resultant stresses can grounds depression. Many Researches have been conducted; measuring the factors like maternal age, mother's features, birth practices and social support of the new mother's expectations. (Wright, Dulude, 2000)
