Postpartum Depression

Abstract

Postpartum depression is a form of nervous disorder that affects some women after 3 or 4 days following the pregnancy and may last several days. This type of depression observed in women when depression is not associated with pregnancy, women who suffer from severe PMS, those who are in a difficult marriage, those who are not too many friends and family addiction, or those who have stressful situations during pregnancy or after childbirth. The typical signs and symptoms of postpartum depression are often similar to those characteristic of the melancholic stage. The treatment may consist in taking anti-anxiety drugs and antidepressants (under medical supervision and suspending any breastfeeding), psychotherapy and participation in group therapy with women who experience the same symptoms.

Introduction

Postpartum depression (Latin for "after birth") is a particular form of nervous disorder that affects some women after 3 or 4 days following the pregnancy and may last several days, appearing in some if true as depression, accompanied by forms of psychosis. Over 70% of mothers in the days immediately following childbirth, exhibit mild symptoms of depression. It is therefore, a rather common reaction whose symptoms include crying for no apparent reason, irritability, restlessness and anxiety that usually tend to disappear within a few days (Spinelli 2009, 405). Much more serious and lasting are the symptoms of "post-partum depression" that may last for an entire year and include laziness, fatigue, exhaustion, despair, lack of appetite, insomnia or excessive sleeping, confusion and rash crying. Other signs are disregard for the child, afraid of hurting the baby or herself and sudden changes in mood.

Medical science still has not provided definitive explanations regarding the causes of the phenomenon, although some studies attribute the appearance of "postpartum depression" to hormonal changes in women, in particular in declining levels of estrogen and progesterone, with high statistics cases of women who experience severe discomfort in the premenstrual phase. In fact, there are many other factors that contribute to the appearance of "postpartum depression", mostly psychological in origin related to the events immediately following childbirth, as the changing role of women in social, fear for his upcoming responsibilities, their physical appearance.
