Introduction

The American electoral process is very unique as compared to the other dominant western democratic nations due to its complex two party systems. The majority of the electoral activity is carried out between the Democratic and the Republican political parties, and the leader of the country is elected form the respective candidates. In the majority of the western democracies this two party system is not implemented rather, multiple the election process is carried out among multiple political parties (Baumgartner & Jones, 2010). This process ensures that the policies structure of the country is not dominated by limited perspectives and the population has an influence over the political structure. In American however the two party political systems has been identified as a unique form of a dual successful dual political structure. In the country both of these parties are able to identify and represent the dominant public opinion, and make the relevant changes.

Ideological Differences: Republicans vs. Democrats

The biggest difference between the two dominant political parties present in the United States of America can be identified as the operational philosophy. The republicans have a history of adopting the conservative approach, where they seek to uphold the traditional American traditions. The Republican philosophy is dependent on the view that the source of the power of the government is present with the people, rather than the government institutions themselves. It states that the citizens of the country should live with liberty and maximum freedom from the government restrictions. The role of the government should be to uphold the liberties and the rights of the people, rather than develop stringent polices and regulations. The Democrats on the other hand also believe that the role of the government should be to ensure the freedom of the population, however they believe that it should be implemented thought the relevant federal government structure (Alvarez-Diaz et Al, 2010). The republicans also show a tendency towards religious influences, whereas the democrats have a more of a liberal stance on the religious factors that are present in the country.

The republicans show a strong support towards the deregulation of the business sector, as they believe that such activities hamper the entrepreneurial spirit of the nation. The Democrats support the improvement in the economy through the regulation of the business sector. In terms of the social policies the stance of the Democratic and the Republican parties is very different. As mentioned the Republicans generally have a strong traditional perspective, and they support the preservation of the core American social norms, whereas the Democrats have a more modern approach and they seek to implement a flexible social policy. These are the two different schools of thoughts that dominate and govern the American two party political structures. In terms of the current global environment, the most significant political stance of these two parties can be identified as the national defense strategy (Ansolabehere et Al, 2010).
