Introduction

The word police in English was firstly used in a book called “The Second Part of the Institutes of the Lawes of England” published in 1642. A constituted body of persons used to enforce law which is empowered by the state. It further helps to limit civil disorder and protect property. The legitimized using of force is also included in one of their powers. Police force is a separate organization and independent of national defense. Therefore, military and other organizations are not linked to police force. Like all other professions, policing also learns from experience. Therefore, the modern police executives try to find more and more effective strategies of policing. They receive further guidance from the police history. However, the difficult part is that police's history is difficult to read and is also sometimes coherent. It is because the history is after all produced by thousands of local departments in which various perspectives and visions have been discussed and explained in their own theoretical approach.

Discussion

Police functions include a number of activities carried out in different situations but the most significant ones are carried out with the preservation of order. Alternative names for police include police department, sheriffs, troopers, law enforcement agency e.t.c. Perspectives on policing functions vary from state to state and from various levels within the state. Since the time of the Norman Conquest, a system of maintaining public order was carried out by Anglon Saxon in Britain and Ireland (Kenneth, 1980).

It was a private system of tithings, which had a social obligation to help others, and for their good conduct.
