Origins and Evolution

The up to date pharmaceutical industry is a highly comparable non-assembled1 global industry. Its sources can be traced back to the nascent chemical commerce of the late nineteenth years in the Upper Rhine Valley near Basel, Switzerland when dyestuffs were discovered to have antiseptic properties. The commerce seen major developments in the seventies with the introduction of tighter regulatory controls, especially with the introduction of guidelines ruling the construct of 'generics'. The new guidelines revoked enduring patents and established repaired periods on patent protection for branded products, a outcome of which the market for 'branded generics'6 emerged.
