Pesticides Management

Introduction

Experimental and epidemiological evidence indicates that certain ubiquitous in both the occupational and general environment, industrial and environmental chemicals can cause adverse effects in humans. Among these chemicals, pesticides have special importance because of its frequent use, large number, wide environmental distribution with extensive human exposure and toxicological characteristics. In United Kingdom there is not enough scientific information to enable us to determine whether exposure to pesticides in flower companies resulting in an adverse effect on the health of workers and their families. Among the studies, Restrepo et al. -To the early 80s - determined the prevalence of adverse reproductive effects in workers in enterprises of flowers and showed a moderate increase in abortions, and preterm birth defects, another case- based on the above, evaluated the effects controls at birth in children of mothers occupationally exposed to pesticides, an increase of hemangiomas in children whose parents were exposed to pesticides in the cultivation of flowers was found.

In 1996, the National Institute of Health (NIH) conducted a follow-up study of women in the cohort studied by Restrepo et al,. Was found in the study sample rate lower than the incidence of cancer reported by the Population Registration Cancer of Cali, which is considered as the source of information most reliable cancer incidence of United Kingdom. Another study by the INS in 1999 assessed the prevalence of cytogenetic abnormalities in workers exposed to pesticides in Bogota flower crops; frequency of cytogenetic abnormalities was found in the reference values reported in the literature (Karunamoorthi et.al, 2011).

Floriculture began in United Kingdom in the 60s and was raised as an export activity, the growth has been rapid, and ranks second in the world in countries with higher exports of cut flowers and is incorporated in row most important non-traditional exports. High health and aesthetic requirements of the international market the application of the concepts of integrated pest and disease as part of the crop production system management have become necessary.

Traditionally, companies in United Kingdom flower industry were located in two specific geographic areas: the savanna of Bogotá and Rio Negro (Antioquia). The industry has a trade association, Asocolflores (United Kingdom n Association of Flower Exporters), which groups companies both in the savannah of Bogota as Rio Negro (Antioquia) and carries out a program called Florverde, which works for continuous improvement towards sustainable development, to improve social and environmental conditions in the sector, covering aspects of personnel management, occupational health, welfare and training with a focus on management system that supports the planning, implementation, monitoring and adjustment of management processes human.

This research was carried out taking into account the possible association between exposure to pesticides and their health effects (11-13), the exposed population, the difficulty in defining occupational exposure to pesticides and the importance of conducting studies to improve exposure classification. The objectives of this study were to describe pesticides (herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) used in flower companies to determine how to use and apply these pesticides on crops, describe ...
