Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

Introduction

There are various diseases that exist in the societies and are faced by many people. Some of the diseases are continuing among the people of the societies from a long time. The following section aims at discussing the disease, namely, Pertussis (Whooping Cough) which is most common among the children and the adults. The symptoms of the disease, the history of the disease, the transmission of disease, the treatments of the disease and the prognosis also discussed in the later sections.

Discussion

Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

The whooping cough is the most common disease that is commonly found among the people. The medical name of whooping cough is Pertussis. The Pertussis is a type of infection that affects the respiratory system inside the human body and it is caused by the division of the bacterium called Bordetella pertussis. When the individual is affected by this disease, it faces severe coughing and the severe coughing end with the “whooping" sound when the individual takes breathe in. This disease most commonly affects the infants that are younger than six months and the children of the ages 11-18 years old whose resistance towards the disease has started to fade. In today's modern world, the various types of vaccinations have now developed that has made easy the prevention from the diseases. Also for the Pertussis disease, various types of vaccinations have been developed in order to provide better treatment to the people and to protect the lives of the people. When the vaccination for the Pertussis was not developed, this disease killed about five to ten thousand people each year in the United States. The development of the disease has reduced the morality rate in the United States and the date rate has reduced to some extent.

History of pertussis

The Pertussis disease was first identified by the Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou in the pure culture in the year 1906. These two medical researchers found the development of the inactivated whole-cell pertussis and based on the culture and the biological structure of the disease, they developed the first pattern for the Pertussis disease. In the 1920, the first medical vaccination for the Pertussis disease was developed by the Dr. Louis W. Sauer. In the later years, the development for the treatment and the development for the vaccination of the Pertussis disease continued and the research studies for the development of the vaccine spread on the wide scale.

As every vaccination and the every treatment of the disease have certain side effect. In order to control and minimize the side effects of the Pertussis disease, the Japanese scientist Yuji Sato build up a cellular pertussis vaccine that consisted of the purified haemagglutinins that are secreted by Bordetella pertussis into the culture medium. The development of this vaccination was the success in the history of the Pertussis disease. The research and the development of the medical treatment are still continuing in the present era so as to bring further improvements in the future of Pertussis ...
