Introduction

Nursing has been an old profession in the field of medicine. Nursing is very important and they are the people who are responsible for providing first aid to patients when they reach the hospital in an emergency. Nurses are required to take good care of the patients and to look after them till they are admitted to the hospital. Patients should also talk to the nurses politely. They can ask them for any medical help at any point of time (Bowman, 1986).

Historical Background

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) is considered to be the founder of modern nursing. She introduced the concept of nursing and taking care of patients. She was greatly influenced by people who provided medical care to the wounded people during the Crimean War. Nightingale was influenced to such a great extent that she started practicing nursing. She started providing medical care to people who needed it (Brockdop, 2002). It was Nightingale who provided respect to the profession of nursing. Before it was seen as a profession where nurses had no training and were incompetent. Nurses were portrayed very negatively in the society and it was Nightingale who brought them respect.

About the Profession

Nursing is one important profession and takes care of the medical health of people. Apart from serving in hospitals, there are nursing homes as well, where care is taken of patients who are old aged or are chronically ill. People who are addicted to drinking alcohol and smoking are usually admitted in rehab centers where they are assisted by the nurses to get rid of this habit. Nurses play a very important role in the nursing houses and are responsible for treating patients. (Daly, Et. al, 2005). There's a different way of treating old aged patients and young patients. For this, the nurses should be trained that how should they act and take care of patients. This training should be conducted during their nursing education. A problem exists with this profession as well. The nursing skills education facility is very scarce.
