Methodology

To address the research question that is, community Policing and National Security Policing, are they mutually exclusive? I will look at four specific view points which are:

Academic

Police

Political

Public

For this purpose, I will list the research methods with which I will approach these viewpoints before visiting each method individually to discuss my reasons for choosing each:

Content analysis

Elite interviewing

Descriptive statistics

In order to answer the research questions indicated in Introduction, a mixed method approach will be the most appropriate for this study. The aim is to explore views of PSNI Chief Constable and head of NI policing board to use information from PSNI, Policing Board and District policing partnerships and media for the content and statistics. The variables included PSNI, Policing Board and District policing partnerships and media.

The strategies used in mixed method approaches include explanatory, exploratory, transformative, or concurrent strategies. The proposed study will employ an exploratory mixed method (Cooper and Schindler, 2006, 28-34). This perspective reflects the purpose of the study and the research questions, which are the driving forces behind all methodological choices.

The proposed study will involve two research stages. A qualitative stage will feature face to face interviews, followed by a quantitative stage which will employ a questionnaire based on interview questions which will be asked from PSNI Chief Constable and head of NI policing board. The first stage will explore the community policing and national security policing. Interviewing from PSNI Chief Constable and head of NI policing board will offer a comprehensive picture on the topic being explored. This information will form the basis for the next stage and used to resolve the research question. This mixed method research approach will be exploratory in nature, one conducted in two parts with priority given to the earlier stage. The mixed method exploratory approach is most appropriate to address the research question and achieve the proposed study goals.

Benefits of Mixed Method

An exploratory mixed method approach includes important advantages that are within the context of the proposed study. One benefit of using this approach is that both research stages facilitate implementing, describing, and dissemination of information (Onwuegbuzie and Leech, 2006, 474-498). Another advantage to using this approach is that it develops and expands a particular phenomenon and provides further clarification of the qualitative information (Creswell, 2005, 41-46). This approach facilitates the recognition, acceptance, and approval of the research community that may be less familiar with naturalistic strategy (Gersh, 2006, 12-17).

Data Sources and Research Limitations

In every piece of research, the concept of methodology is one of the most significant, as it functions as a guide for the whole research that is, are Community Policing and National Security Policing mutually exclusive. Designing the appropriate research methodology is a difficult, but essential that determines to a high degree the significance and validity of the research results; any mistakes and omission can lead to the wrong direction and thus adopting the wrong statistical techniques and tools.
