Parenting Styles and Conduct Disorder in Adolescents 

Abstract

This paper provides an extensive literature review regarding the conduct disorder issue and its relation to the parenting styles. The negative and inappropriate parenting styles lead towards the prevalence of conduct disorder among the children and adolescents. It is important to prevent the progression of such violent and delinquent behavior and attitude among the children and adolescents at early stage. It is because the control over the behavior and attitude of children become lost in the later stages of conduct disorder. The parenting programmes are effective for the treatment of conduct disorders among the children and adolescent rather than directly treating the victim of the problem. The study provides information regarding the conduct disorder and the effective treatment strategies to deal with the issue of conduct disorder among the children and adolescents. The methods incorporated involve the key word searching to find relevant articles to the study and area covered under the literature review. Further researches can be done to evaluate the risk factors related to the conduct disorders among children and adolescents.

Introduction

The issue of conduct disorder prevalent among the adolescents and children can be expressed in the form of a diverse range of behavioral and attitudinal patterns of the children and adolescents. It varies from the intense and frequent temper tantrums and a continuously progressing disobedience among the behavior and attitude of the children and adolescents. The conduct disorder occurs when the disobedience becomes persistence along with the intense and frequent temper behaviors results in the serious delinquent actions by the children to adolescent. These actions might involve theft, aggression, rape and violence (Loeber & Burke, 2011). One of the major factors that has been observed among the people suffering from this order is the violation of social norms and others rights. Thus, it becomes necessary to understand the origin of such acts and the presence of conduct disorder issue among the children and adolescents. It is also required to identify where the conduct disorder actually lies within the social concept of delinquency. Since, the phenomenon of delinquency is directly associated to the legal issue, therefore, the consequences of the conduct disorder are higher than they seem to be apparently. The delinquency actions by the children and adolescents are also treated separately with the change in the judicial procedure and the police procedures. The parenting styles are identified as the most important characteristics that impact the behaviors and attitudes of the children and adolescents. The conduct disorder is also closely related to parenting styles and the enhanced of such behavior among the children and adolescent is directly correlated to the inappropriate parenting styles. The failure of parents to provide a sufficient and appropriate control over the activities, behavior and attitude of children is the most important factor that results in the aggressive behavior among children and adolescents (Maughan et al., 2004).
