Dr. Joseph believes that for most of the parents sending their children to the university is tough task particularly in the first few semesters. Similarly, he discusses that when the students enter in the university they usually have little or no knowledge of different procedures and policies of the college. They are not properly aware of either the courses or instructors. The new students familiarize themselves by asking questions and queries from the peer students who have passed some time there. There are also a few online resources through which information about the instructors can be obtained like Rate My Professors. In article, “The Idea of University” Mr. Scruton has defined the idea of a university given by Henry Newman, who was the rector of the Catholic university of Ireland from 1854 to 1859, presently University College Dublin.

Most of the institutions also take the placement test which consists of questions from English, Math and Science. The English exam measures the written abilities of the students as they will have to write various reports and term papers during their stay at the college. Some of the colleges have also introduced remedial Math and English courses before the admission in the college (Maresca p.1). In these courses, the basics of English and Maths are taught to the students who have not studied them either at their grammar schools or high schools. There are also no credit hours for these courses. They also cost almost $2000 to $3000 per month tuition (Maresca, p.1). Maresca also defines that the text books of the college are also very expensive. Although some times for most of the courses, copies are available, but for most of the courses the students have to purchase new books. Also, Mr. Maresca suggests that it is better to read a few chapters of the technical subjects before entering into the class. Most of the students also take the CLEP Examination, which help them to earn the credit hours. The author also defines that most of the colleges also provide the orientation about the registration processes and the students also attend those in order to familiarize themselves with the registration (Joseph, 2010). Moreover, the professor may also grade the students on various criteria instead of any one like class participation, midterm, class discussion and final exam.
