Organizational Management and Operations

Introduction

Within every nation, there are certain organizations which work for the protection and ensured safety of its people. One such organization runs by the name of police, which works for the complete safety of people from societal and criminal dangers. However, the operations of the police are different on local, state and federal levels because of certain affecting factors and events (Miller, Hess & Orthmann, 2010). In order to better understand the policing function at the local, state and federal level, and to compare and contrast between their organizational administration, leadership and operations; an in depth discussion regarding the relevant factors and forces is required.

Policing at Local, State and Federal Levels

There are enormous amount of differences between the policing operations at different organizational levels according to the local, state and federal level. Knight (2004) identifies that the most major differences among these include:

Local Level

On the local level, the law enforcement agencies provide services to the people within their communal jurisdiction. Most common among these provided services include:

Routine Patrolling

Provision of Emergency Services

Conducting Criminal Investigations and Arrests

Prepare and execute crime prevention plans

State Level

The State Level policing goes a step above the local level due to its extended coverage area and responsibilities. The most common differences between the local and state level policing include:

Security of State highways and rural areas

Inspection of motor vehicles as per United States Regulations

Apart from the above mentioned duties, the major difference between the state and local level policing comes in the form of staff, resources, jurisdictions and budget allocations.

Federal Level

The United States Marshal Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation and United States Border Patrol are some of the most renowned names in the Federal Policing area. The major differences in the federal level policing include:

Responsible for activities of counterintelligence, counterterrorism, public corruption, cyber crime, organized crime, civil rights, major theft and violent crimes and white collar crimes.

Apprehension of fugitives

Protection of federal courts and judges

Transportation and management of prisoners

Protection from illegal immigrants and smugglings

Comparatively observing, the local, state and federal levels of policing are all directed towards the common goal of protecting the same piece of land. However, the only major difference making their levels distinct are their staffing, jurisdictions, support, funding and operations. Moreover, in the dynamic society in which we reside in the present times, the roles of policing at local, state and federal levels are subject to regular changes on continuous basis.
