Mission Statement Analysis
Mission statements have been studied extensively over the past 20 years. Recent years have seen increased attention to the connections between mission statements and organizational practices. One focus has been the degree to which organizations (and their members) adhere to the values or principles expressed in their mission statements, especially those related to social responsibility and commitments to stakeholders, broadly defined. Most research presumes that appropriately constructed mission statements should significantly enhance a firm's ability to achieve its objectives. Mission statements can play an important role in directing and focusing employees, and inspire and motivate them to perform at high levels. Mission statements may also function to sustain normative control over organizational members. Mission statements are also presumed to guide and direct employers' decisions and facilitate a shared sense of organizational purpose and values. Organizational declarations of their mission establish internal and external expectations and heighten leaders' accountability to stakeholders for meeting these expectations.
The mission statement of Starbucks is discussed in the paper for a critical analysis. A brief introduction about Starbuck is that, Starbucks is an international company specializing in buying, roasting and selling coffee. Also sells espresso and distilled cold drinks, teas, accessories, and other food products through its chain consisting of nine thousand locations spread over 34 countries. The company opened its first store in 1971en Seattle, USA. The mission statement of Starbucks is “to inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time”.
Mission statements are pervasive features of American corporate life. Over 80% of companies in various surveys report having these statements (American Management Association, 2002).The mission of Starbucks should not be just words printed on a sheet of paper. These should be their norms of behavior and principles that determine the nature of how they conduct their business every day. As consumers of Starbucks and other executives view Starbucks' mission statement as valuable tools in their corporate communication, management, and strategic planning (Bart, Bontis, & Taggar, 2001). Therefore, mission statement of Starbucks should be “An authentic experience to convey the art of making espresso, a place to think and imagine; a haven of comfort that provides a sense of community, a place that welcomes people and reward them for coming”.
