Discussion
Objectives of Operations management
Operations management objectives are divided into following two categories; customer service and resource utilization.
Customer Service
This objective of operations management system is to satisfy the customer. Customer service is the key important objective of operations management system. In order to achieve this objective, the operations management team has to satisfy the customer in terms of timing and cost. The objective is to provide customers with the right thing at a desirable time and right place.
Resource Utilization
This objective of operations management system is to utilize the resources effectively in order to gain customer satisfaction. Using resources effectively mean to achieve the operational activities done by efficient use of resources. The improper use of resources leads to the failure of operations management systems. The concern of operations management is to utilize the resources by getting maximum possible effect out from these resources and decreasing the waste resulting from operations activities. The target here is to use a resource with getting maximum achievable output with respect to the potential of that resource.
Performance is said to be satisfactory when operations management system is getting most out of these objectives. Getting most of these, means to maximize the customer satisfaction with the efficient use of resources. Operations management should keep both of these objective components aligned to prevent themselves from having an organizational conflict. Operations managers should opt for a balance in these objectives (Clark, & Fujimoto, 1991).
