Case Study

As a newly qualified registered nurse (Band 5) in your first post you are undertaking a period of six months preceptor ship to help you settle into your new role. The area is very busy and there is a lot of staff absence due to sickness. It is your view based on your experience that the team is poorly motivated, and you consider the staff to be poorly led as the ward manager has a directive style. You are concerned that the quality of care is below standard. There have been a number of adverse incidents recently and there is pressure from senior management to improve patient safety. You get on very well with the nurses and most of the health care assistants (HCA), though there is one HCA who constantly challenges you over your delegation decisions and this has led to some arguments between you.
