Nursing and Quality assurance (Quality Improvement)

Introduction

Within health care nursing is a profession who focuses on care of families, individuals and communities so they may attain, recover or maintain optimal quality of health and care. The chief task of a nurse is to support wellness through health education of a patient. They have expanded their roles and it consists of task such as performing physical examinations, taking patients comprehensive history of health, managing and formulating regimens of care for acute and chronically ill patients, ordering laboratory tests and procedures. They usually work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, health care personal offices, nursing home facilities and clinics.

For all health delivery quality is an integral part. It means excellence of a service or a product, including its reliability, the lack of defects, its attractiveness and long term durability. Quality assurance is basically providing mechanisms to monitor, improve and evaluate patient care effectively, which are being provided by the professionals of health care using some cost effective resources. As calculated by proven standards of nursing practice the quality assurance nursing program is concern with the assessment that are quantitative of nursing care. Assurance of quality system motivates nurses to struggle for fineness in delivering quality care and to be extra flexible and open in experimenting with ways that are innovative to alter outmoded systems. The concept of quality in nursing care was introduced by Florence Nightingale in 1855 during the Crimean war while attending the soldiers in the hospital (Kissam.S et al, 2003).

The specific objective of nursing process are to formulate plan of care ,evaluate the achievement of nursing care ,to attend the patients physical and non physical needs and to support the delivery of nursing care with administrative and managerial services. For measuring and improving quality dashboards can be valuable to staff nurses and can serve as a feeder system to the manager's dashboard.

In a nursing practice there always is a move away from quality assurance to continuous quality improvement within the field of Quality in health care. Whenever we design a program this change needs to be considered so that quality can be ensured with in a critical care environment. Many approaches are available one of which includes dynamic quality improvement program. It usually involves improving everyday practice and solving problems whilst focusing on recipient of the service. Quality assurance has become absolutely crucial in nurse education to ensure its quality for the delivery of safe and high quality nursing care. The need further propelled by market forces which demand competent nurses for dynamic complex health care delivery systems, policies, regulations and professionalisms. Nursing activities are focused by the patient such as the prevention of pressure sores and eye care can be the basis for standard setting, actions to improve the care and audit of the critically ill patient in a comprehensive program of quality ...
