Chapter 1: Introduction

Through this assignment, I will reflect the experiences and situations that taken place during my clinical placements after my break from the clinical work for having five children and moving to the area with ever changing personal circumstances. I will explain this in four domains of Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2004), which is required for the learning of nurses in order to become professionals. These four domains include: Professional and Ethical practice, Care delivery, Care Management and Personal and Professional development. Further, I will also highlight my reflective based learning and how it contributes to my development of professional practice of the nursing. Finally, I will give conclusions of how this reflective practice enhances nursing practice. I will reflect my experience related to the patient whom I code as Mrs. Mary, which is not her real name in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct (2004) which states that you must protect the confidentiality of the patient's information from an improper disclosure. I will discuss my clinical experiences through the Gibbs (1998) Reflective Cycle. Gibbs (1998) Reflective cycle is very effective for the nursing profession as it helps nurses to consistently and consciously monitor their practices to ensure that they are beneficial for the patients as well as it keep liaison according to the professional and ethical practices (Walker, 1996, pp.27). Thus, using the Gibbs (1998) model, I will be able to improve my nursing practices consistently and learning at each step from the experiences for the better future practices of the nursing. The cycle will help me analyzing my situation, feelings, experiences, analysis, conclusion, and finally to prepare an action plan if the any inappropriate situation event arose (NHS, 2006).

Chapter 2: Discussion

2.1. Professional and Ethical Practice

This section will describe the events of my clinical nursing placements. I previously worked for the mental health community setting but need to take a break for looking after my five children. Since then, I return to my nursing profession and currently I am working as foster carer and complimentary therapist at the hospice at home West Cumbria that provide palliative care for the terminally ill patients (Hospice at Home West Cumbria, 2012). There are indeed several examples of the research shapes that create an impact on including up to date policy, mental health act, ethical/cultural mental capacity act, and the nmc code of conduct. My circumstances have changed tremendously after taking this course. My objective is to return to the mental health nursing so as to utilize my skills, knowledge and build the therapeutic relationship with my patients and the people around. The place where I am working is the community mental health settings that provide mental healthcare needs to the adults.
