Culture & Health

Illness and health are two internal concepts of each culture. For a better understanding of the prevalence and distribution of health and illness in a society like Australia, we need a comprehensive approach that combines sociological and anthropological issues in addition to biological and medical knowledge about health and disease. From the anthropological point of view, health is linked to political and economic factors that guide human relations and shape the social behavior and influence the collective experience. Traditional Western medicine has always believed that health was the same as absence of disease, from the Public Health means to influence the causes of health problems and prevent such problems through healthy behaviors and healthy. From medical anthropology to understand the disease, this ecological approach - cultural stresses that the environment and the health risks it is mainly created by the culture. Culture determines the distribution partner epidemiological diseases in two ways:

From a local perspective, culture shapes the behavior of people, which predispose people to certain diseases.

From a global perspective, the political forces

Economic and cultural practices make people act with the environment in ways that can affect health.

Some habits that influence our health are:

- The organization of working time and rest time. - Food. - Personal hygiene. - Cleaning the home. - Ventilation of the home. - The manner and circumstances in which we travel to work. - The way we organize our work. - The fun and leisure. All activities of our daily lives are culturally conditioned. Culture shapes our behavior homogenizing social behavior. Human beings act from a certain culture of health, we share a set of basic principles that allow us to integrate health in the immediate social system. Social acceptance happens to respect these principles and make them visible to others.

Culture is a variable that is used to explain health inequalities. The most important theories in this regard are: Cultural or Behavioral: Part of a set of beliefs, values, norms, ideas and behaviors of disadvantaged social groups, as a source of inequalities in health status thereof. It is designated as "culture of poverty" (the poor have a preference for unhealthy behaviors, unhealthy lifestyles). Since the behavioral sciences has been considered that individual behavior and personal lifestyle freely chosen is one of the main determinants of health, and differences between individuals and among groups members of society. Materialist or Structural: questions the idea of the power of free choice and that this is the origin of health inequalities. Stresses the importance of factors associated with involuntary exposure to a poor social environment and hazardous to health
