The criteria for hospitalization have become more unlikely due to stricter defined parameters for admission of patients, where only those with seriously complex and major psychiatric disorders who have suicidal or homicidal tendencies are to be admitted.

The emergency department is often the first reporting point in getting access to the health care system. Although most of the emergency departments are well equipped with mental health professionals who can diagnose and provide appropriate referral, there are certain facilities which due to lack of professionally trained staff in the field misdiagnose and make inappropriate referrals.
