The New York City is the most populous urban city in the US. It is a part of the state of New York. The city exerts a substantial influence upon commerce, fashion, arts, media, finance, technology, research, and education. It is also the center of international diplomacy. The city faces several natural and manmade hazards. The authorities have to adopt several mitigation techniques in order to save the assets and people from the consequences of these hazards.

Identification of Hazards

Introduction

Hazards make buildings, people, and infrastructure vulnerable to damage. They cause economic injury, personal injury, potential loss of life and property damage (Natural Hazard Risk Assessment, 2009). There are two types of hazards, natural and man-made. The New York City is vulnerable to both types of hazards that are discussed below.

Hazard #1: Earthquakes

Earthquake is defined as the sudden trembling or motion of the ground. This trembling is produced by sudden displacement of masses of rock beneath the surface of earth.

Hazard #2: Floods

Floods are temporary and general conditions of complete or partial inundation on a land that is normally dry in nature. Flooding can be categorized as flash, riverine, or coastal.

Hazard #3: Tornadoes

Tornadoes are local atmospheric storms that occur for a short time period. Tornadoes are formed by winds that rotate at extremely rapid paces. These winds typically rotate in a counterclockwise direction.

Hazard #4: Global Warming

Global warming is a hazard that is caused by burning fossil fuels. This burning releases carbon di oxide and greenhouse gases in the environment. Subsequently, the temperature of the atmosphere gets increased.

Summary

The natural hazards that are faced by the New York City are earthquakes, floods and tornadoes. Additionally, the most common man made hazard that is faced by the city is the hazard of global warming. All these hazards can cause serious damage to the city if their intensity is high.

History shows that very few injuries occur due to this hazard and fatalities do not occur at all.
