Doctors, nurses and coordinators like EMR as compared to paper based and early computer based system, where they are able to view patients? record and order lab report instantly. While these stakeholders like the feature for scheduling appointments and viewing lab reports, they complain about the system for not being dynamic in updating patient data related to pharmacy. It is argued that such un-integrated system existed while managing patient record in paper based system and with EMR, the expectation was to see this integration happen. With the introduction of EMR, the job responsibility of each professional has been defined clearly. This approach has greatly reduced workload of nurses while in the meantime increased the responsibility and participation of doctors in the entry of patient data (Gefen 2009, 13-23).
Security permission relating to patient data is one of the primary problems that exist while accessing patient file during registration. This stage of data entry has been identified to be prone to introducing error relating to patients. All of them agree that a system is as good as a user using it. If a healthcare professional involved in data entry is not careful during the initial stage of data gathering, then it will be much more expensive and harder to locate and correct those errors in the record at a later date. In the data collected for this research, it was observed that health professionals were optimistic in using a technology that would benefit them in their jobs, increase their performance if they were provided with proper training and support services. Though some senior doctors still do not exactly believe that the system exists to speed up the process and improve job performance, junior doctors tend to like and adopt more quickly (Ponder 2011, 34-35).
The healthcare provider knows that EMR has significant advantage over paper based medical record. Some of the important advantages included the saving on storage space and the ability to access and print the data immediately. Both of these features helped in savings of cost and time. Additional advantage included EMR being environment friendly, as it saved paper by storing records digitally. EMRs come up with built in template to write patient notes, which was expected to reduce errors while writing and making note in a standard format that included clicks of a button (Mason 2008, 29).
To reduce the problem associated with billing that can be created by free texts. Hospital administration promoted the use of standard template in note-writing and did not allow free text note writing in EMR. This approach was expected to control revenue loss for the hospital. However, senior doctor prefer the option of free text note-writing. Some of the disadvantages of EMR, in a doctor's view, are all patient ...
