Introduction

For lovers of history and religious monuments in California, Mission San Diego de Alcalá's Basilica is a place that has to be a staple when the city tour. Built in 1769 on the old city, the Basilica is the first step of what will eventually become 21 channels of Spanish missions in California, founded by Franciscan Friar Junipero Serra. This first mission and surrounding areas were inhabited by the Kumeyaay Indians long. The Spanish then the name of the Catholic Church known as Saint Didacus San Diego. Thus, the Basilica of marks one of the first milestones in San Diego is the connection from then to the rich history of the city.

Discussion

Since its original location in Old Town, the Mission moved to its current location in Mission Valley, where he was captured by the local tribe of the years after its construction. This led Serra to use thick adobe walls and clay tile roofs in the reconstruction, so it will be harder on fire, a move that has inspired 20th century California architects.

The rich history includes its role as the site of many firsts in the history of California as the first Christian burial and the first public execution in 1778. Also, California's first Christian martyr, Father Luis Jayme was put to rest under the chancel floor. All these connections important to the history of San Diego and California in general, have Basilica de Alcala Mission National Historic Landmark.

Today, the Basilica houses a museum and gift shop where tourists can get their memories. They are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and can be easily reached by bus or tram.
