Introduction

Obscurity and detailing are the distinguishing characteristics of the works of Kawabata. The readers of his novels get the insights about the characters through some comment, or any unimportant gesture, or a stamp or a mark of lipstick. Most of the novels that are written by Kawabata have mostly been hit and very successful.

Discussion

The story is about a young man by the name of kinoju. He used to live with his father and the family of his father's brother. The father's brother had a daughter by the name of Yemiha who was the same age as that of Kinoju. They used to eat together, study together and play together. They were simply inseparable. The young boy and his father were not so well off like the girl's family. It was the love between the two brothers that had them stay together. Otherwise the brothers and their families were poles apart.

The mother of Kinoju had died when the boy was only 2 years old. Since then his only support was his father. His father was not very lucky in the businesses that he tried to start and so eventually he came to his brother for help. The brother supported them and helped them and since then, kinoju and his father had lived in the house of his uncle and his family.

Young kinoju was a very reserved boy with not much of confidence. Although he was very honest and sincere, but he would always keep his feelings and his thoughts to himself. He was a very sensitive and an intelligent boy. Yemiha on the other hand was filled with confidence and was a very happy go lucky and an outgoing sort of a person. At some points, she also acted like a spoilt brat because since the very beginning she had been pampered and fed with a silver spoon. She would get everything that she desired and had servants all around her to fulfill her every command. Nevertheless they both were very good friends. At the age of sixteen Kinoju's father decided to send his son abroad to study and make a good successful man out oh himself, something that he was not able to do for himself.
