Limit State Design of Steel Structures
Introduction
A Civil Engineer has to make sure that the facilities and structures that the designs are safe, fit for what purpose they are made for, durable and as well as economical. Therefore, the most important key responsibility of a civil engineer designer is to ensure the safety of his designs. Though, it is not easy to assist the design stage that how much safe the proposed design is going to be. Moreover, there is a lot of uncertainty of many factors, which effects the economy and safety both. These uncertainties that influence the structure safety may be due to uncertainty of the strength of material, loading, behaviour or due to the dimensions of the structure. They usually bring difficulties to the designer so that he is not sure about giving the guarantee of structure safety (Kumar & Kumar).
Principles of Limit State Design
While designing the structures, limit states should be kept in mind for which they may become unfit for their purpose. Following are some principles that should be kept in mind:
Load deviation from the specified values
The deviation of structure from actual behaviour from the design analysis
To reduce the probability that the loads which are acting together, would reach the characteristic value simultaneously
The possibility of material deviation from the proposed design in the structure
Strength reduction of the material from its characteristics
Preparing tolerances
(Narayanan & Kalyanraman, 2003, p. 5 & 6).
Steel Structure Requirements
Structure of steels such as antenna tower, structure that are offshore steel bridges should be based on an intelligent design theory complete analysis should be provided, and the engineering design must also be accepted by the concerned authority (http://www.sigi.ca).
Applications
There is a vast range of steel structure applications, some of them are:
Mixed system construction
High span steel structures
Unusual constructions
Movable steel structures
Poles, tank tracks and plate work structures
Structures that support cranes
Structure that requires architectural satisfaction or some other requirements
(Http://www.sigi.ca).
Discussion
Consider a structure component lets say a beam that has been designed to carry normal load given to it. First of all, the bending moment is computed that are produced by the load. Further they are compared with the resistance of ...
