Social sustainability is associated to how we make choices that affect other humans in our global community. It emerged as part of the business response to the Rio Earth Summit of 1992, led by Swiss industrialist Stephan Schmidheiny, which initially involved a team of enlightened CEOs from some 50 companies. It evolved through merger with the World Industry Council for the Environment (WICE) in 1995 and established a permanent base in Geneva. The WBCSD promotes a vision of businesses that are committed to working with employees, their families, the local community, and society to improve the quality of life. The council tends to see market-based solutions rather than regulation as the answer to sustainability challenges and seeks progress through better information for consumers about the social and environmental effects of their choices and initiatives for poverty reduction.
