Juvenile Offenders: Youth Crime

Considering the patterns of crime prevalent in the United States, it have become much more visible that youth has been identified as the segment which is most prone to committing crime and pertaining to actively practice criminal activities in the world today (Ross & Yinger, 2002). According to the Youth Justice Board (2011), an estimated 176,511 offences were being committed by the youth that resides in the context of United States, costing the country approximately £4 billion annually (Cornish & Clarke, 2003, pp. 84). The authorities and the heads of state designing the laws, policies, rules and regulations, have growing concerns regarding what measure, Strategies, steps and attempts need to be undertaken for the purpose of creating the best and most effective outcomes, in order to reduce the occurrence of youth crime and their further involvement. Therefore, I would recommend government to pay attention towards the youth crime and a lot funds to curtail these juvenile offenders.

School Violence

The amount of violent crime varies among schools, with some schools more susceptible to violence than others. Overall, public schools tend to have more problems with student discipline and violence. Violence is also more prevalent in middle schools than elementary or high schools. Some estimates suggest that middle-school students are twice as likely to be victims of violence as their high school counterparts, and that the typical offender at school is a seventh-grade male robbing or attacking a similar youth (Gordon & Piana, 2000). However, I would like that government should fund specifically this area reason being that youngsters become accustomed to such violence and they do not find any hesitation while committing or dwelling into crimes.

Firearm

Firearm violence poses a risk to children in the United States in general; in 2008, nearly 21,000 children and teenagers under 19 years of age were injured by a gun (Finkelhor & Ormrod, 2001). A study of school shootings in 2002 by the U.S. Secret Service found that about two-thirds (68 percent) of student attackers obtained the gun or guns used in their attack from their own home or from a relative, and according to the U.S. Department of Justice, between nine and 17 percent of high school students believe that it would be easy to obtain a weapon without alerting an adult.

Directed Patrol for drugs and guns is an alternative sentence to jail or prison available to individuals who have been accused of certain crimes related to drugs. It is the suspension of criminal proceedings for a prescribed period of time under certain conditions after a defendant pleads guilty. For example, in this program, the defendant pleads guilty to a drug charge, but the sentence was postponed to a later date (6 to 18 months) (Lindahl, 2001)..
