Second Language Acquisition

Challenges faced by immigrant children

The population of immigrant students has been increasing strongly, but the teaching population includes some ethnic minorities. The method of adult English language acquisition for considering English as a second language is considered as complex and challenging. There are issues related to language, education, tracking learner's progress and culture is complicated as the population is diverse and is based on varied learning contexts. One challenge is the struggle for respect. It is ironic that so many people look down on immigrants, because immigrants often work harder than we can imagine. Not only work harder but to put so many injustices. Another challenge may be related to that pride of their culture: the language barrier. Despite the fact that there is no official language of the United States, immigrants face discrimination when they do not speak English or do not speak to certain standards.

The classroom consists of students who speak different language. Furthermore, there are people who criticize this segregation, especially because they believed that their mother tongue should be discussed in school. For helping students in learning English the teacher should make every effort to ensure that students learn and understand everything in English (Valdés, Capitelli, Alvarez, 2011). It is important that these students receive the extra attention they need in this regard.

Immigrants also face challenges collaboration in the school or university they are studying. They should be provided certain pre-university courses which offers training for students with English as a second language and to help them improve their writing skills. The Students also face challenges regarding the history, philosophy and the importance of education in the country which they are at present. Students also face challenge related to interaction with teachers as they are unable to discuss their problems with students. Teachers play an important role in this regard as they should always be prepared to meet student's needs in multicultural classrooms. It is therefore important that the teacher should be aware of what is required for these students language development and is as favorable for them. Students also face challenges related to understanding the content and develop the additional knowledge of the country and understand the language used as a whole.
