Landfill & its Impact on Environment in Victoria-Australia

Summary

The implementation of environmental rehabilitation of the environment and improvement of technological zones of influence of solid waste landfills must assess the nature and intensity of techno-genic pollution of disturbed area near the landfill, as well as to determine the methods necessary either to restore the lost ecological functions of these areas or to reduce negative impacts on the natural environment that is, to bring the disturbed areas in a safe condition (Baez-Cazull, et, al. 2008).

The environment within the zone of influence of solid waste landfills is experiencing significant human impacts are often greater than the natural environment due to the possibility of self-purification of the periodic removal of debris. At the same time disturbed the natural landscape, heavily polluted by the entire natural environment underground and surface water (including sediment), soil, air, directly or indirectly affects the health of people living in nearby settlements. In this connection it is necessary to return to the business of degraded land, polluted water, located near the test sites, and give them the forms of natural, organically fit into the structure of the surrounding landscape (Karapanagioti, et. Al, 2001).

Introduction

The defining feature of typing, solid waste landfills - the degree of environmental risk of their impact on the environment. According to the degree of danger there are three types of landfills potentially hazardous sites; middle ranges of environmental hazards; polygons, relatively safe and virtually no impact on the environment. Potentially hazardous solid wastes landfills are characterized by a number of common features municipal solid waste landfills (active and closed) have a negative impact on the environment (Senko, et. Al, 2002).

However, zone of pollution of major landfills is 1.5 km (in the direction of mass transfer); landfills are typically located near the villages, rivers, ponds, suburban cooperatives, forest, sometimes near the reserve; surface drains polygons - heavily soiled medium (based on the total index of contamination by heavy metals). The soils around the landfill are moderately hazardous, dangerous and extremely dangerous category of pollution; environment is experiencing the greatest impact of large polygons with mixed waste (Karapanagioti, et. Al, 2001).

Legal Governance

Due to its characteristics can be generated waste an important environmental problem since the time the producer generates. If we talk of municipal waste, the producer has to get rid of trash commonly called due to space considerations, and in the case of the organic fraction of odors and the possible emergence of insects and other living organisms (Chen, et. Al, 2004). These wastes generated temporarily accumulate along public roads in urban areas, either in single family cubes, as is still done in some small towns, or in community containers distributed in different parts of the population. In both cases poor management in the collection of waste can cause, and a negative visual impact, odors appear (break down organic matter) and to appear and proliferate both insects and rodents, which is an obvious health risk for the population...
