Task 1

Introduction Star Topology

In order to design a network for North Manchestor Community College (NMCC), a network topology is required to be selected. A network topology is defined as the manner in which devices and computer systems in a network get laid out. NMCC will be implementing its network in the form of star topology. In a star topology, all network components are connected to a center component known as the hub of the network (Dean, 2010, p. 198). This hub can either be a switch or a router. Every system in the network is connected every other system via the hub.

Advantages of the star topology

There are several advantages of the star topology. They are discussed as follows:

Star topology is an easily manageable topology due to its simple operability and functionality.

The expansion of this topology can be easily carried out due to its simple format.

Star topology allows easy location of problems, thus making troubleshooting easier (ETDPTECH, n.d., p. 3).

Disadvantages of the star topology

The disadvantages of star topology are discussed as follows:

In a star topology, the cable is very long consisting of several nodes. This may cause the network to get slowed down in speed.

The functioning of network is completely dependent on the hub.

In case of a hub failure, the entire network's functioning gets halted.

Utilization of a switch or router as hub adds to the entire network's cost.

Why is chosen this topology

Star Topology is chosen by NMCC due to the reason that this topology supports small networks. This topology is quite effective in a network that has a limited number of nodes. Additionally, it is easy to add or remove a node from the network at any time without having any effect on other parts of the network. Star Topology would provide NMCC the additional advantage of central management. This would make network monitoring feasible for network administrators. Star topology would provide NMCC a flexible, inexpensive, and easy to implement media or cable. Star Topology would provide NMCC with a set up in which the hub acts as a station amplifier which amplifies the signal to remove any ambiguity in it.

Three layer hierarchical model

The three layer hierarchical model is shown in the diagram below (Oppenheimer, 2004, p. 142):

Core Layer

Core Layer is the topmost layer of the model. This layer is considered as the backbone of the network. It is made up of several fastest, biggest, and extremely expensive routers.
