In this essay, we will be discussing about the knowledge management techniques and its application on a company, named East Perth Echidna Club. In addition, we will be analyzing the nature and business of the company with applying ERP (Enterprise Resource Plan) on the system.

Question 2 - Knowledge Management Tools and Techniques

The structure of East Perth Echidna Club is a naturalist organization with a number of assets. However, the membership list is dwindling in the company regardless of the fact that they have club room, a library, and a collection of curiosities such as collection of equipment and field notebooks from early naturalists. The topics with which they are concerned are the ways to find new ways of serving the community. The technological infrastructure needed by the company is that of web-based knowledge management and publication system for using it to systematize their research. This is to make sure that the club remains compatible with specified standards to create records; however, they are not aware about their current usage and their requirements. They are contemplating using HISPID for floral specimens; however, they also want to remain compatible with ecological systems in use in Europe (Ackoff 1989).

We will be considering four tools for the East Perth Echidna Club. The first is Database Management System. Database Management System is a software system for storing and sharing information in a database, ensuring quality, continuity and confidentiality of information, while hiding the complexity of operations. It will be useful for the club as it provides various functions required by the company in order to have web-based knowledge based system. DBMS can register to find, edit, sort, transform, or print the information in the database. It allows consideration of minutes of recorded information and includes mechanisms to ensure consistency of information, prevent information loss due to failures, ensure privacy and allow its use by other programs. Depending on the model, the DBMS may include a simple graphical interface to sophisticated programming languages (Arrow 1962).

Another tool that must be used by the company is that of data mining. The data mining is the set of techniques and technologies to explore large databases, automatically or semi-automatically, in order to find repetitive patterns, trends or rules that explain the behavior of the data in a given context. It can be used by the company to track the behavior of current members that what do they like in every visit and what activities do they repeat on every visit. Basically, the data mining appears to try to help understand the content of a data repository. To this end, it makes use of statistical practices. In general, the data is the raw material. At the time that the user attaches special meaning to them go on to become information. When specialists are developing a model, making the interpretation that arises between information and the model represents an added value, we refer such data to knowledge.
