Introduction

The article that I chose for performing my critical evaluation of content quality was “The Future of Journalism: Developments and Debates” by (Franklin 2012, pp.663-681). The article presents an expansive approach to the field of journalism by taking a radical and comparative approach towards assessing the prospects of future growth of journalism in the face of the existing challenges of new media and technology which is shaping readers' lifestyles, habits & approaches, and the impact of the infamous Hackgate scandal which has reshaped the British Journalism industry permanently. The paper also discusses new media for deliverance, and the standing of legacy media in face of these innovations. This article makes significant contribution to the field of Journalism, particularly visible by the fact that the author has also published a book by the same title in 2012.

The article basically employs and undertakes an exploratory approach towards assessing the future of journalism. This is evident by the fact that it presents different debates on different issues such as emerging media, illegitimate or incompetent contributions by all sorts of people, and the approach of journalism in the presence of these challenges. Experts are (indirectly) invited to contribute to the debate on the basis of their findings. The second highlight of the paper presents a critical issue: the causes and consequences of the Hackgate scandal, the Leveson inquiry, and questions over the supervision of the regulatory personnel themselves. Interesting insights are incorporated within the paper by the inclusion of various authors' perspectives and opinions.

Discussion

The article has been written for the purpose of exploring the future of journalism in the face of the emerging online media channels that are not only reshaping the field but are also self-evolving, converging boundaries, and redefining the modern reader as one who “wishes to comment and contribute [through] his experiences and views on the subject”. Franklin is a renowned personality within the field of Journalism as his contributions have not only been reshaping policies and practices, but also adding to national development. This article itself builds upon the theme of the Future of Journalism conferences held in 2009 and 2011. This piece of research is regarded as a hallmark within the field of Journalism itself, owing to the fact that it serves as the platform upon which several studies would be conducted, several debates would be held, and the issue of preserving and continuing legacy media would be brought to the general public. Its significance and standing within the Journalism field can be gauged by the fact that it is frequently used as a referral point in numerous literary works. The bulk of the paper focuses on local as well as international implications and impact of the changing nature of the journalism.

The article by (Franklin 2012, pp.663-681) was compared to a few earlier publications on the same subject. The first one was “The future of Journalism in the digital environment” by (Bird 2009, pp.293-295). Published in Journalism, the article takes a comparative-reflective approach to the subject by redefining journalism ...
