You Can't Teach What You Don't Know

According to the publishers Gary Howard tries to elaborate what are the reasons that should compel a teacher to not to fake it instead they should possess the necessary knowledge and skills so that they can teach to the students. In this chapter, Howard discusses the issue of transformation and identity by linking these issues with his personal experience. In this chapter, he implies that penetrating deeper levels of subconscious dominance is the main problem. By saying this, he wants to point out that the problem lies in the culture and not in white people and someone form the society should accept the responsibility to bring change. Furthermore, he also points out that this factor can be found in almost all the cultures or colors. He says that knowledge and construction are two elements to understand the phenomenon of dominance (Howard, 1999).

In this chapter, Howard mentions his experience of indulging into different movements, which lend a, hand to him to undergo deep paradigmatic shifts. Howard discusses his participation in a presentation and shows that the administrators told him that in all the previous presentations teachers were very reluctant in giving the presentation about multiculturalism. Howard suggests that in order to instill education in multicultural settings it is imperative for teachers to adopt the phenomenon of philosophy. Until they have a proper procedure that gives them surety that this is being done because there may be some teachers who may not pay emphasis on components (Howard, 1999).

One of the most impressive aspects of this chapter is that this book is written in an honest way. Moreover, details given in this chapter can be considered authentic and reliable because Howard wrote it on the basis of his personal experience.

Classism Privilege Equity

The phenomenon of cultural poverty is something that deviate our attention from existing dangerous culture, which is the culture of classism. Howard points out that culture continuously harden our schools today. In today's era, we keep low level of expectations from a student coming from low-income background. This aspect impact a teacher's believe on his students. Most importantly as a result of this people ignore their attention what poor people lacks which is inequality of human rights (Howard, 1999).

Howard declares deficit theory as the most destructive tool of culture of classism. The field of education embraces the phenomenon of deficit theory. This approach describes a student in terms of weakness while ignoring their strengths. Howard continues to talk about deficit theory and states that according to deficit theory poor people are poor because of their poor morality and intellectuality.
