Introduction

ISO 9000 is a family of standards that relates to the management of the quality systems and is designed with the purpose of assisting the organizations to ensure that they are meeting the wants and the needs of the customers and various other stakeholders, and in doing so the organizations are following the standards, regulations and statutory requirements pertaining to the products. ISO publishes these standards and these standards are available for all, through the National Standards Bodies. ISO aims at dealing with the basic fundamentals of a management system based on quality. It includes a set of eight management principles on which the very foundation of this family of standards is based. ISO deals with all the requirements which organizations and companies wish to meet and fulfill their standards. There are third party bodies for certification that are involved in providing confirmation at an individual level, making sure that all those organizations that wish to achieve the standards of the ISO, achieve it successfully.

More than a million organizations all over the world are certified at an independent level, thus making ISO 9000 one of the greatest and widely used tools of management in the business world today. Irrespective of the fact that ISO 9000 is a worldwide recognized and used tool for measuring the performance and aiding the organizations to work up to the set standards, it has been criticized by many as being a useless and wasteful process.

An overlook of the ISO 9000

The adoption of the ISO 9000 at the global level attributes to a very large number of factors. Many major purchasing and procurement firms require their counterparts and suppliers to hold this certification. In addition to the fact that this certification offers benefits to several stakeholders, there have been various studies that identify the financial advantages for those companies that have been certified with ISO 9000. A survey conducted in 2011 by the BAB (British Assessment Bureau) shows that more than 40% of their clients who were certified with this ISO certification, have been successful in winning new businesses. Other researches show that the organizations that are certified have gained greater return on the assets, as compared to those that are not certified. Some researchers have found that those organizations that are certified have a greater level of superiority in their performance.

The research done in this regard displayed that all this was significant in terms of statistics and was not a result of an organization's size. Many agree that implementing ISO 9000 leads to greater performance at the operational level in the United States motor carrier industry. Uniform improvements were recognized in performance pertaining to the operations and it was connected to the greater level of financial performance.
