Abstract

The manner in which the human mind works, learns, develops and adapts to different situations has intrigued scientists for a very long time. There are several aspects that researches of the subject take into considerations when assessing the development stage of an individual. Cognitive, social, psychological and moral development are some of the developmental subjects that have been studied most commonly and extensively. This paper aims to assess the development stage of a child in the fifth grade with the aid of an interview.

This report presents the findings of an interview that was conducted with the purpose of assessing the developmental progress of a child of 5th grade. The assessment of the development of the child took into consideration four different aspects - cognitive, social, psychological and psycho-social. In terms of cognitive development, Piaget explains that the cognitive activities, while described functionally individually, interact together to get a particular behavior (Siegler, 1991). To get an idea of the social and biological implications of evolutionary development of the human being briefly mention some of the highlights of cognitive functions.

The neuropsychology and cognitive science have been essential to expanding the definition of memory. It should include all the knowledge we acquire, retrieve and use without being aware of it. It should also include motor skills and perceptual knowledge, which, most used unconsciously (Slavin, 2006). In summary, the report includes an enormous background of experience that the body has stored through his life in the nervous system to adapt to the environment, whether this is conscious or not. In this way, the brain is able to access critical data relating to past experiences and use them to great effect when dealing with similar situations. This is how the cognitive development of the child is developed (Santrock, 1995).

To assess the developmental stage of the child in terms of cognitive development, the interviewer used props and visual aids to test how effectively the child was able to grasp the concepts. It was learned that the visual aids and props helped significantly in the identification of the cognitive developmental stage (Vasta et al., 1995). The interviewer was able to conclude that the child's cognitive development was in the concrete operational stage where his intelligence was demonstrated with the help of systematic and logical manipulation of symbols that were linked to concrete objects.
