1. TITLE OF THE PROJECT
Intervention: The Impact of Unit Specific Competencies on Quality of Nursing Practice for Nurses in Critical Care Unit
2. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Being traditionally conservative, Saudi Arabia is perceived as a country with limited opportunities for healthcare workers, especially for women. But the fact is that during the past two decades, the healthcare infrastructure within the Kingdom has improved extensively, with hospitals providing the best possible healthcare facilities to seriously ill patients. The Riyadh Military Hospital - with the first web-based ICT programme for training of graduate nurses - has led the way and has become a role model for other hospitals within the Kingdom, and more importantly in the Middle East region (Aboul-Enein, 2002).
Competency is a term that is used abundantly in the nursing literature and throughout nursing practice. This term, in the context of nursing practice, generally refers to a broad but vague, and sometimes confusing, understanding of a nurse's ability to adequately perform his or her duties. These duties are performed according to a set of predetermined standards (Brooten, Youngblut, Deatrick, Naylor, & York, 2003, 73). Measurement of nurse competency presents a formidable challenge. Indicators used to measure an individual nurse's competence vary depending on the construct being examined.
3. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The main objective of the study is to analyse the impact of unit specific competencies on quality of nursing practice for nurses in critical care unit at the Riyadh Military Hospital .At the end of this study, it would be interesting to assess the staff nurses at intervals like after or 6 months to 1 year time.
3.1. Specific Objectives
The specific objectives for this particular study will be:
To identify indicators of quality nursing care within the RMH ICU
To assess the competency levels among graduate nurses working at the RMH ICU
To explore any difference in provision of quality nursing care for individuals enrolled in training sessions as compared to those who did not enroll in these sessions.
3.2. General Objectives
The general objectives of this project will be:
To highlight the importance of competent nursing practices in Saudi Arabian healthcare system
To address the risks involved in provision of quality nursing services
To provide an in-depth insight in to the prevailing nursing practices within the Saudi hospitals
3.3. Secondary Objectives
The secondary objectives of this project will be:
To highlight the perception of professionalism in Saudi nurses working at RMH ICU
To discuss the importance of ethics in the field of nursing, with a particular emphasis on Saudi healthcare system
4. MATERIALS AND METHODS
For this particular study, the researcher will use mixed method research approach. The notion of mixed method being a combination of ...
