Introduction

Nursing is a very respectful profession around the globe, Florence Nightingale is considered to have contributed a lot of respect to this profession (Davis. 1999). Nursing requires several professional abilities and skills to perform the duties in an effective manner. It requires knowledge, experience, patience and interpersonal relationship skills to become a successful nurse. The issue most of the nurses face is, managing the relationships in the work place and family. It gets easy with time; however, every nurse should be aware of ethics and code of conduct related to her profession, from the very beginning.

Discussion

It gets very difficult for a nurse to manage work life and home life especially when she is the only bread earner of the house. I have to balance the work life while not affecting my personal relations. There are a specific set of expectation from a nurse in the workplace while when she step outside, she has to set her objectives again to personal life.

Interpersonal relationship can be defined as the association between two or more people, which can range from temporary to lifetime, and personal to professional. The context can vary widely. Each situation demands a particular behavior to effectively communicate and carry out activities of mutual interest.

Five principal components exist between the relationship of a nurse and a client. Trust, empathy, professional intimacy, power, and respect. The trust is the most fundamental need of this relation, as the patient is in a vulnerable situation. I fulfill the promises made to the client and never breach that. That's how I gain the trust of my clients.

I understand that, Interpersonal relationships are obvious in interactions among individuals and may range from professional to personal. Each has its own boundary limits, and set of acceptable behaviors. Personal relationships include casual acquaintance, friendship, romantic, platonic, and sexual relationship. There is my husband at home, being retired. I get so involved in professional life that even after coming home, still think of the incident at the work place. I curb that by removing uniform I wear for the office. As the uniform is the symbol of my profession. Therefore, as soon as I change it, I feel at home completely.

The relationship between a nurse and a patient is therapeutic and professional. My professional relation endures the needs of clients first, always. I understand that this relationship is purely to meet the needs of patient and not mine. It is my duty to set and maintain the boundaries of relation with the client. No matter what the patient desires, boundaries should always be maintained by me. Since it's me, who is going to suffer because of it, also the responsibility is mine. I am the one specialize and have superior knowledge in this field.
